Words Worth Knowing

Transformation- When one strand of bacteria turns into another by a gene or genes.

NucleotidesSubuite where nucleic acids are made; made up of a -carbon sugar, a phophate group, and a nitrogenous base.

Nucleic Acids- macromolecules that contain hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus.

Base-pairing- principle that bonds in DNA and can only form between thymine and adenine and guanine and cytisine.

Double-helix- Structure of DNA.

DNA- Stands for deoxyribonucleic acid; set of nongenetic traits, qualities, or features characterizing a person or thing.

RNA- Stands for ribonucliec acid; single-stranded molecule trenscribed from DNA in the nucleus, mitochondrion or chloroplast.

mRNA-Messenger RNA

tRNA- Transfer RNA

Transcription-  synthesis of an RNA molecule from a DNA template.

Translation- Process where the sequence of bases of an mRNA in converted into the sequence of amino acids of a protein.
