Griffith's Transformation:

  •  Experiment used to discover if disease-causing bacteria can pass it to harmless bacteria.
  • He injected lab mice with disease-causing bacteria(S strain) and they developed pneumonia and died.  Then he injected them with harmless bacteria(R strain) and they lived.  He injected more with heat-killed bacteria(S strain) and they lived.  When he combined the S strain and R strain, the mouse developed pneumonia and died.  Somehow, the desease-causing ability was passed to the harmless bacteria from the S strain.

 Hershey-Chase Experiment:

  •  Experiment used to determine which part of the virus entered the bacteria cell.
  • They grew viruses in cultures containing radioactive isotopes.  This was clever considering that proteins have almost none of the isotopes they used so they used them as markers.  This allowed the scientists to tell which molecues entered the bacteria.

 Miller-Urey Experiment:

  •  Experiment used to determine what kind of environment was needed to sustain live in early Earth.
  • Helped discover DNA by finding that in an experiment in making amino acids also made amazing amouts of adenine which is one of the four compounds of DNA and RNA.
